Coursework

The Electrician training program is inclusive of nine Instruction sets that will guide you to develop the technical skills and expertise that are essential to your chosen new career as an Electrician.

The first set of instructions will be sent to you once your enrollment to this program has been completed and thereafter accepted. The consequent Instruction Sets will be provided once you have successfully completed your examinations. This ensures that you are in possession of training material at all times.

Note:

Students graduating from the Electrician Training Program will also be able to earn 6 credits toward an Associate Degree in Industrial Electronics and Electrical Maintenance Technology at our institution.


The following is a brief insight into the coursework and the order it follows:

Instruction Set 1

Learning strategies:
This set gives detailed information on the advantages of studying from home, the various types of examinations and the tips to handle these effectively, establishing a study schedule for yourself and useful study tips.

Getting started as an Electrician:
This set focuses on electrical distribution, house circuits and also simplifies electricity for in-depth understanding.

Instruction Set 2

Working safely with Electricity:

This set deals with safety aspects of electricity and how to deal with shock and first aid information that is vital. It also provides instruction on classification and categories- National Electrical Code® (NEC®), OSHA.

Electrician's tools:

This set focuses on metric conversion, measuring instruments and equipments used by electricians.

Practical exercise:
Fundamentals of Electricity

Learning aid:
DVD on 'Safe use of hand tools' will be provided for better learning. Equipment: Parts kit for Electricity will be provided.

Instruction Set 3


Nature of Electricity:
This set deals with insulators and resistors, electrical symbols used in schematics and simple circuit operation.

Electrical Equipment, Part 1:
This set will teach you about pull boxes and splice boxes, conductor and conduit fittings as well as boxes and fittings.

Electrical Equipment, Part 2:
This set discusses devices and loads, thermostats, fuses, switches, relays, remote controls and control diagrams. Practical Exercise: Installation of Electrical Equipment

Learning Aid:
DVD on 'Installing Switches, Receptacles, and Lamp holders' will be provided. Equipment: Combination Wiring Tool, Screwdriver Set, Safety Goggles. Parts Kit for Installing Electrical Equipment will be provided.

Instruction Set 4


Conductors:
This set will provide you with information about sizing conductors, properties and characteristics of conductors, installing and connecting wires and cables in residential circuits.

Working with Conduit:
This set deals with installing conduit fittings and supports, tools that need to be used to bend conduits and how to determine conductor and conduit size.

Practical Exercise: On Conduit and Conductors.

Learning Aid: DVD on 'Doing Conduit Work' will be provided.

Equipment: Parts Kit for Conduit and Conductors will be provided.

Instruction Set 5


Wiring Electrical Components, Part 1:
This set deals with cabling and boxes, mounting and wiring boxes as well as three-phase circuits.

Wiring Electrical Components, Part 2
This set will instruct you about major appliances and space heater wiring, devices and fixtures, lamp control and wiring lamp holders.

Math for the Trades:
This set will teach you about basic math operations, English and metric measurement, using a protractor and how to use formulas to solve problems.

Circuit Analysis and Ohm's Law:
This set deals with using Ohm's Law, finding the total resistance in series, parallel, and series-parallel circuits, reading current, voltage, and resistance with the help of a meter.

Working with Multimeters:
This set will teach you how to perform tests for short circuits, perform resistance tests as well as measure current and output voltage.

Practical Exercise: Working with Circuits

Learning Aid:
DVD on 'Special Wiring Applications' will be provided.

Equipment: Digital Multimeter, Parts Kit for Working with Circuits will be provided.

Instruction Set 6

Electric Heating:
Use and measurement of heat; liquid, gas, and resistance thermometers; ultrasonic and solar heating.

Controls for Air Conditioning:
Controls for heating, cooling, ventilating, and humidifying; pressure, humidity, and air cleaning.

Reading Electrical Schematic Diagrams:
Electrical drawings; schematic symbols; distribution circuits and symbols.

Practical Exercise:
Wiring HVAC Circuits

Learning Aid:
HVAC System Schematic will be provided

Instruction Set 7

Electrical Blueprint Reading:
Parts of blueprint, including conduit, cable list, and bill of material; symbols and abbreviations.

Wiring Electrical Circuits:
Feeder and branch circuits; wiring a residence; portable, fixed, and stationary appliances.

Transformers:
Connections of single-phase or polyphase
transformers; autotransformers; maintenance.

Practical Exercise:
Advanced Electrical Work

Instruction Set 8

The National Electrical Code®:
This set will teach you about working with and interpreting codes, how codes apply to common tasks.

NEC® Graded Project:

This set will help you to evaluate actual wiring diagrams in order to locate code violations, lay out a portion of a wiring diagram to conform to the NEC®.

Textbooks:

National Electrical Code® and Understanding the National Electrical Code® will be provided
Supplement: Work Experience Option will be provided

Instruction Set 9


Troubleshooting Electrical Systems:
This set will help you deal with common problems that occur in electrical systems and provide you with basic troubleshooting steps.

Electrical Estimating:
This set teaches you about the estimates for residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations.

The Business of Electrical Contracting:
this set teaches you about employee management, business costs, organization, insurance, bidding, dealing with customers on a regular basis and business growth.
Textbook: 'Electrical Estimating' will be provided

Graduation Set
Students of the institute have access to an online library to be used in the duration of the course. This library can be utilized for research for the courses for general reference and links to valuable resources. The library contains articles research aid, databases, books as well as Web links. A librarian is available to answer queries on general research-related topics via email and to assist students in research activities. A High School Diploma is essential to enroll in this program.
